Ask yourself - when was the last time you did something for the first time? Why yes, I totally yoinked that from the Darius Rucker song. Think about the question. When you try something new you have so many emotions running through you. Now think about the first time you considered butt plugs. Nervous? Excited? Scared? Uncertain? Let's talk about pluggin'!

What is a butt plug?

A butt plug is a sex toy that was specifically made to be inserted into your rectum (ass, booty, peach).

What are butt plugs used for?

Regardless of sexual orientation, genitalia, and genders, butt plugs are used for sexual pleasure. Sexual pleasure such as stimulating the prostate and causing amazingly pleasurable sensations near the back of the vaginal wall. Butt plugs are also used before anal sex to "loosen up" the rectum. Honestly, butt plugs are meant to - PLUG YOU UP!

What does a butt plug look like?

The nifty thing about butt plugs is that they come in all different shapes, sizes, and materials.

Does size matter?

When it comes to butt plugs - YES, GODS YES! The reason I say this is strictly because you can severely damage your anal sphincter muscles. You always want to start out slowly and with a small "thinner" plug.

What material should I get?

This one is going to be TOTALLY up to you! You will want to ensure that whatever material you choose is Non-Porous* & Phthalate-free*. Below are the main three materials you will find when shopping for butt plugs.

Metal: Most metal plugs you encounter are stainless steel. Other metals can be used to make butt plugs but for all of you lovely people who need hypoallergenic metals for your piercings like me, stainless steel is the way to go! They are heavier than the other materials in my opinion. I personally love the "heaviness". They are very smooth which helps out with insertion. Metal plugs hold temperature very well, meaning the metal will be cool when you first use it, and the longer it is inside of you the warmer it will get due to your internal body temperature.

Silicone: The most common butt plug material you will encounter is silicone. Silicone plugs can be shaped/molded to all different sizes. Silicone is also very soft and pliable. I dislike silicone plugs but that is just my preference - you will never know what you like until you try it!

Glass: Glass butt plugs are very popular. Their shapes, sizes, and colors are gorgeous. Glass butt plugs are hard to break (if properly made). The glass, like metal, holds temperature very well and also exhibits the "heaviness" you can find with metal plugs. I love to experiment "cold play" with all my glass toys!

**Non-Porous - A non-porous material doesn't have voids (holes) larger than the volume of a few atoms. This ensures that you will not have anything absorbing into the material of your butt plug.

**Phthalate-free - Phthalates are chemical compounds used primarily to enhance the flexibility and durability of plastics like plasticized PVC and it has been noted that high exposure to phthalates is also linked to cancer.

What shapes/styles do butt plugs come in?

The almighty butt plug has transformed from a simple "plug" to extravagant, slim, thiccc (yes -with 3 c's), elegant, and daring designs. Below are just a few styles:

Classic Plugs: When I say classic plugs, I am referring to the standard bulb-like shape with a small "T-shaped" or flared base. When you go into a sex shop or look online. A silicone plug along these lines will pop up first. Like the Doc Johnson Classic Butt Plug series.

Vibrating Plugs: Vibrating butt plugs are popular due to the different vibration patterns and strengths. Vibrating plugs either come with or without a remote. This is fun for discreet play with your partner or alone in a public place. Some may have a built-in vibrator, while others have a hole in the base for a bullet vibrator to be inserted. One of the absolute cutest vibrating plugs I have come across is the Princette Puppypus - Vibrating Silicone Toy by Cute Little Fuckers. I mean come on... Look at it!! *insert cute sigh here*

Expanding Plugs: Expanding Plugs are very aesthetically pleasing to look at and remind me of an alien facehugger. However, most people compare them to resembling a flower that is blooming. The interesting part of the expanding plug is that you need to "hold the arms" together to insert, once inside the arms will expand giving you that "filling" feeling. This will also cause a different feeling than normal plugs because it will be rubbing/touching areas that the other plugs do not. FST Silicone Flower Shape Anal Plug sold on Amazon is a good plug to see the general shape of the expanding plugs.

Inflatable Plugs: Inflatable plugs are like balloons. They start off as a small plug that requires you to use the pump attached to fill it with air. Now there are some inflatable plugs that do not have a hand pump. Whenever I talk about these I feel like I should be on a game show shouting "PUMP THAT PLUG" over and over again! The more the plug inflates, the more intense sensation and full you will be. This type of plug is recommended for those who enjoy larger plugs but have issues with insertion. Here is one of the most purchased inflatable plugs from Lovehoney - Vibrating Inflatable Butt Plug.

Tail Plugs: Tail plugs are a personal favorite of mine. Tail plugs are often used for cosplay, pet play, animal play, and overall just something different and cute. Tail plugs are exactly as they sound - a plug with a tail attached. There is a WIDE variety of tail plugs to choose from including but not limited to: cats, pigs, dogs, raccoons, bunnies, wolves, foxes, and ponies. I have a gorgeous Black Fluffy Faux Tug Tail from Vuzara. Tug tails are meant for pulling/tugging *wink wink*.

Jeweled Plugs: Jeweled plugs are also referred to as Princess plugs. These plugs have the same "shape" as the classic plugs but have that gorgeous large jewel on the base. These jewels range in colors - pick your favorite or have the whole damn rainbow! Some jewel plugs have smaller jewels that make the most attractive patterns. I am in LOVE with my Crimson Tied Scarlet Heart Anal Plug!

Do I really need lube or can I just spit on it?

YES! In fact, you will need OODLES of lube. Your rectum does not self-lubricate. You will need lube to help insert your butt plug. However, you need to choose what lubricant you are buying carefully. Silicone toy - avoid silicone lube and stick with a water-based lube (silicone lube breaks down the silicone on your plug). Metal and Glass plugs can work with all different kinds of lube. I advise people to NOT BUY NUMBING ANAL LUBE! Numbing lube makes it hard for you to realize you are pushing it too far. You are more likely to damage the anal sphincter muscles with this type of lube.

Do I need a flared base?

Do you want to be the person at the ER with a plug stuck up your bum? Yes, it is advised that you have a flared base since the rectum can act like a black hole and swallow it up. You can also have a plug with a ring, or a curve/handle.

Last Question... What is the best position for insertion?

I would have to say I have the easiest time inserting a plug while I am in the doggy-style position. However, that may not be true for you. You will have to experiment with what makes YOU comfortable.

Summary:

Plugs are friends - not foes. Take it slow, start small, ease in, LOTS of lube, and have fun!
